THE ROLE OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: A CASE STUDY OF IGBO

Abstract

Language serves as a major medium for the transmission of knowledge, culture, and identity, and its role in sustainable development cannot be overemphasized. This study examines the role of the Igbo language in promoting sustainable development in Nigeria. The study adopts Language Ecology Theory as its theoretical framework. Data were collected through oral interviews, focus group discussions, textbooks, and online sources. A qualitative research approach was employed to analyze the data using thematic and content analysis. The findings reveal that the Igbo language contributes significantly to sustainable development by serving as a medium for the transmission of indigenous knowledge, cultural values, and social mobilization. However, its full potential is constrained by its underutilization in formal education and government, as well as by negative attitudes towards indigenous languages. The study concludes that achieving sustainable development requires the active promotion and utilization of indigenous languages such as the Igbo language. It therefore recommends the integration of the Igbo language into the formal education system, government administration, the media, and digital platforms, supported by deliberate language policies and systematic documentation efforts.
