CORRUPTION VIS-À-VIS NATION BUILDING: NIGERIA AT THE CROSS-ROAD

Abstract

The aim of this research is an investigation into the impact of corruption to nation building in Nigeria and the prospects for better democratic nation. This paper makes use of the method of analysis to examine the pervasive problem of corruption in Nigerian within the context of its evolving democratic process. While the nation operates on democratic governance amid electoral disputes, this moment presents a critical opportunity to realign with the true ideals of democracy and national development. While making reference to Nigeria’s historical and global reputation for corruption, the study highlights how entrenched corrupt practices and weak institutional frameworks have significantly hindered economic growth, deepened poverty, and alienated citizens from governance. By analyzing the contagious and systemic nature of corruption in the Nigerian polity, the paper demonstrates its central role in sustaining underdevelopment. This paper argues that meaningful progress and the realization of developmental goals depend on a decisive break from corrupt practices. Hence, the study concludes by proposing practical solutions aimed at curbing corruption and fostering a more accountable, transparent, and prosperous society.
